Keralam has emerged as one of the leading states in India in private electric vehicle (EV) adoption, reflecting a growing shift among consumers towards cleaner mobility solutions.
According to the India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025, prepared by NITI Aayog in collaboration with World Resources Institute (WRI) India, Keralam has performed strongly in private EV registrations, with electric vehicles accounting for a significant share of new private vehicle purchases in the state.
The index evaluates states and Union Territories based on key parameters including EV adoption, charging infrastructure readiness, and research and innovation in electric mobility.
The report highlights Keralam’s growing acceptance of electric vehicles among individual buyers. The state recorded a 12% share of private EV registrations, placing it among the better-performing states in consumer adoption.
Keralam’s urban density, high literacy levels, increasing environmental awareness and preference for cost-efficient mobility solutions have supported the growth of electric vehicles, particularly in the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments.
However, the state’s overall position in the electric mobility ecosystem is influenced by factors beyond sales, including charging infrastructure, policy support and innovation capacity.
While consumer demand for EVs has increased, expanding charging infrastructure continues to be a key requirement for faster adoption.
Availability of public charging stations, faster charging facilities and better integration of charging networks will play an important role in encouraging more consumers to shift from conventional vehicles to electric alternatives.
Several states that have performed well in the overall IEMI ranking have benefited from stronger charging networks and policy frameworks. Delhi topped the 2025 index, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.
India’s electric mobility sector has been expanding rapidly, supported by government initiatives, improving vehicle technology and increasing consumer interest.
The IEMI 2025 report assesses the progress of states across three major areas — transport electrification, charging infrastructure readiness and EV research and innovation — providing a snapshot of India’s transition towards electric mobility.
For Keralam, the challenge ahead will be converting strong consumer interest into a complete EV ecosystem supported by charging facilities, manufacturing opportunities and long-term policy stability.
