Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) will facilitate trial seaplane operations connecting Kochi with various islands in Lakshadweep from May 13, in a move aimed at improving regional connectivity and boosting island tourism.

The trial operations are part of an initiative to assess the feasibility of launching regular seaplane services to the islands. A 20-seater Twin Otter seaplane owned by Skyhope Aviation Limited will be used for the operations.

12 trial seaplane flights

The trial routes include Kochi–Agatti–Kalpeni–Kavaratti and Kochi–Kadmat–Kiltan–Agatti. A total of 12 trial flights are scheduled over three days, covering multiple island destinations.

CIAL said it would provide operational support and coordination for the trials in association with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the Lakshadweep administration, the Airports Authority of India and other stakeholders involved in the project.

The proposed seaplane connectivity is expected to improve accessibility to the islands, support tourism growth, strengthen emergency connectivity and contribute to regional economic development in Lakshadweep.

Officials described the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening air links between Kerala and the island territory, while opening opportunities for sustainable tourism and faster transport services.
