The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has proposed to set up 315 high-speed charging stations across 277 new locations inKerala.
The expansion is being planned under the Central Government’s PM E-DRIVE scheme. KSEB has applied for a subsidy of ₹60 crore, which will cover nearly half of the total project cost.
This Phase-2 expansion comes while work is already underway on Phase-1, where 335 chargers across 209 locations are being installed using a ₹63.12 crore grant from the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
In a major departure from its earlier approach of relying solely on government land, KSEB is setting up 95% of the new stations (299 out of 315) on private land.
By inviting private landowners and Charge Point Operators (CPOs) through Expressions of Interest (EoI), KSEB aims to rapidly expand the charging network without being constrained by the availability of government land. These fast-charging facilities will primarily target major highways across the state.
To significantly reduce charging times compared to existing infrastructure, a vast majority of the proposed facilities will feature high-capacity, heavy-duty chargers:
120 kW Chargers: 245 units
240 kW Super-Fast Chargers: 43 units
60 kW Chargers: 27 units
Additionally, KSEB plans to upgrade older stations with higher-capacity chargers compatible with newer EV models. Construction under Phase-1 is expected to be completed by March next year.
Under the proposed plan, Ernakulam leads with 39 stations, followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 32, Thrissur with 28, Malappuram with 27, Palakkad with 26, Kozhikode with 22, Kottayam with 19, Idukki with 14, Kollam with 14, Alappuzha with 13, Kannur with 13, Kasaragod with 11, Pathanamthitta with 10, and Wayanad with 9.
