The Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA) has decided to stop publishing monthly box office reports of Malayalam films. Association secretary Listin Stephen said on August 17 that the move follows differences of opinion among members on whether such figures should be made public.
He explained that while the association had been releasing theatre collection figures since January, these did not include other revenue streams such as digital rights and satellite deals. Some producers felt that releasing partial data created an unfair picture of their films’ overall business.
The KFPA had initially framed the reports as a step towards transparency, helping producers and the industry track trends and financial outcomes. But the experiment quickly stirred debate. According to Listin, not just committee members but also those outside the group expressed concerns about the reports.
So far, collection data was published for films released until March. The April figures were never released, and the association has now formally stopped the practice.
