Fort Herbal Drugs has quietly built a name for itself in the Ayurvedic industry by staying true to tradition, all while keeping a keen eye on modern health needs.
Based in Palakkad, the brand has been producing Ayurvedic medicines for decades, offering solutions for everything from diabetes and skin issues to sinusitis and fatigue.
The story of Fort Herbal Drugs is rooted in family. The brand was founded by three women — Malathi, Shanthakumari, and Sudha — who, together, have shaped the direction of the company. Their husbands — Rajan, Muraleedharan, and Mohandas — had already been part of the Ayurvedic medicine scene, passing down the knowledge that would later form the foundation of the business.
In 1997, they began small, launching products like Fort Rub for pain relief and diabetes capsules. The trio didn’t just rely on a factory setting — they personally went out and introduced their products to Ayurvedic doctors in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, ensuring their products met real-world health needs.
It’s not just the family’s legacy in Ayurveda that’s made Fort Herbal Drugs stand out; it’s also the way the women in the family have taken charge. With an 80% female workforce, the company has fostered an environment where women play a pivotal role in shaping the business. From Malathi, Shanthakumari, and Sudha leading the operations, to the next generation stepping in with fresh ideas, Fort Herbal Drugs remains a solid example of female leadership in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
"My father’s experience in marketing and my uncle’s focus on research were key to shaping the products we offer today. We’ve been able to expand the business thanks to their combined efforts," says Vandana Rajan, part of the next generation of leaders at Fort Herbal Drugs.
Fort Herbal Drugs is all about offering a full wellness experience. With over 80 products in its portfolio, including hair oils, body care products, and immune-boosting remedies, Fort Herbal Drugs has something for everyone. Around 45 of these products are currently available in the market, in forms like oils, syrups, creams, and capsules.
What sets the brand apart is its approach to marketing: instead of relying on big-budget ads or celebrity endorsements, Fort Herbal Drugs has built its reputation through word-of-mouth and customer trust. "We’ve never needed advertisements. The quality of our products speaks for itself, and that’s why people come to us," adds Vandana.
As for the future, Fort Herbal Drugs is looking to expand its reach both across India and internationally. With a growing demand for Ayurvedic products worldwide, the next few years could see the brand’s products in markets far beyond its home state.
The brand’s commitment to quality is evident. Fort Herbal Drugs has received the Kerala Government’s Best Entrepreneur Award twice and continues to meet the highest industry standards, including GMP certification.
