National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to install Project Information Sign Boards with QR codes across stretches of the country’s highways, aiming to make road travel more transparent and user-friendly.
The vertical boards will allow commuters to scan QR codes for project-specific details. Information available includes the National Highway number, project length, chainage, construction or maintenance period, as well as direct contact numbers for the highway patrol, toll manager, project manager and resident engineer.
The codes will also link users to emergency helpline 1033, the nearest NHAI field office, and a list of nearby facilities such as hospitals, petrol pumps, toilets, police stations, restaurants, vehicle service stations, puncture repair shops, and e-charging points.
For visibility, the QR sign boards will be fixed at toll plazas, truck lay-byes, rest areas, wayside amenities, and highway start or end points. The idea is to make crucial information available at spots where road users are most likely to stop.
NHAI expects the move to help in two ways — offering basic project transparency and providing quick access to local facilities and emergency contacts. It could also improve awareness about highway stretches and enhance safety for regular users and long-distance travellers alike.
