Ram Mohan takes over as MPEDA director

MPEDA aims to promote marine product exports from India

Dhanam News Desk

Ram Mohan MK has stepped in as the new director of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the central body under the Commerce Ministry that oversees India’s marine exports. It’s not an unfamiliar turf for him — he’s been with MPEDA since 2003, gradually making his way up through key departments like marketing, quality control, and infrastructure development.

He also brings a bit of international flavour to the role, having earlier served as MPEDA’s resident director in Tokyo.

More than a bureaucrat

Ram Mohan isn’t confined to MPEDA’s corridors alone. He currently holds board positions at MIDCON, Seafood Park India Ltd, and Lakshadweep Development Corporation Ltd.

On the academic front, he holds a postgraduate degree in mariculture from CMFRI (affiliated to CUSAT) and a PhD from ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai.

What’s MPEDA?

MPEDA was set up in 1972 under the Commerce Ministry to promote marine product exports from India. It not only pushes for export growth but also keeps an eye on the quality of what’s going out of the country.

With Ram Mohan taking the reins, there’s cautious optimism within industry circles about what direction MPEDA might take.

Given his experience across both domestic and international operations, some feel he might focus more on strengthening overseas ties, improving export quality standards, and possibly shaking things up in infrastructure planning.

But as always in government setups, change — if it comes — tends to walk, not run.
