Tamil Nadu overtakes Gujarat in marine fish catch; all-India output up 3 percent

Mackerel remained the most landed species at 2.70 lakh tonnes.

India’s marine fish production recorded a modest recovery in 2025, rising 3 percent year-on-year to 35.7 lakh tonnes, according to the latest estimates released by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

The data signals a gradual stabilisation in marine landings after weather-related disruptions in recent years, though regional disparities remain pronounced.

Tamil Nadu outpaces Gujarat

Tamil Nadu emerged as the top marine fish-producing state in 2025, overtaking Gujarat with total landings of 6.85 lakh tonnes. Gujarat slipped to second position following a sharp 15 percent decline in output.

The fall in Gujarat’s catch has been attributed to a combination of adverse weather conditions, extended fishing bans, and cyclonic disturbances that affected fishing activity across key coastal zones.

Kerala holds third position

Kerala retained its third position with marine fish landings of 6.24 lakh tonnes, marking a marginal 2 percent increase over the previous year.

While the overall growth remains modest, the state saw a notable recovery in oil sardine landings — a crucial species for Kerala’s fisheries economy — offering some relief to fishermen after recent periods of volatility.

Top species and catch composition

CMFRI’s annual assessment highlighted the continued dominance of a few key species in India’s marine fish basket:

  • Indian mackerel remained the most landed species at 2.70 lakh tonnes

  • Cephalopods followed at 2.57 lakh tonnes

  • Oil sardine ranked third with 2.53 lakh tonnes

The data also indicated improved landings of cephalopods and threadfin breams, reflecting shifts in catch composition and fishing patterns.

Mixed outlook for sector

Despite the overall increase in national output, the sector continues to face structural challenges, including climate variability, regulatory restrictions, and regional imbalances in fish availability.

For Kerala, the slight uptick in production and the rebound in oil sardine offer cautious optimism, though sustained growth will depend on stable marine conditions and effective fisheries management.
