Viju Jacob, executive chairman of the Ernakulam-headquartered Synthite Group, has been selected for the business excellence award by FOKANA – a network often referred to as the largest global association of Malayalis. The award, according to organisers, is meant to recognise Jacob’s long-standing contributions to industry and global business leadership.

The announcement comes as the Federation of Kerala Associations in North America (FOKANA) prepares to host its global convention at Gokulam Grand Resort, Kottayam, from August 1 to 3. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan is scheduled to present the award during the event.

Spices and strategy

Synthite, founded in 1972 with just 10 employees, has emerged over the years as one of the world’s leading producers of spice oleoresins—concentrated extracts used widely in the food and flavour industries. The group currently claims to supply around 40% of global demand for these extracts.

It has often been referred to as the ‘King of Spices’ in trade circles, owing to its deep market penetration and export strength. The company is known for its focus on value-added spice products and has been a significant player in Kerala’s spice export sector.

A chocolate surprise and global factories

With reported revenues touching ₹3,500 crore, Synthite’s reach goes far beyond Indian kitchens. The group has set up subsidiaries in countries including the US, Brazil, China, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. It has also made inroads into the premium chocolate segment through its brand Paul and Mike, which made headlines after being picked for an International Chocolate Award.

The company’s manufacturing philosophy is centred on using naturally sourced ingredients, a trend that has found increasing favour in global markets.

From a handful of people to thousands

From a small unit started in 1972, Synthite has grown into a firm employing over 3,000 people. The group’s expansion over the decades is often attributed to a blend of technology adoption, steady export diversification, and a leadership style that appears to focus on long-term planning.
