Dense winter fog triggered widespread flight disruptions on Sunday morning, forcing IndiGo to cancel at least 68 services across key airports, with Delhi bearing the brunt of the impact. The cancellations affected multiple domestic routes spanning north, south, east and west India, disrupting travel plans for thousands of passengers.

Delhi worst affected airport

According to IndiGo’s flight status data on December 21, Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi recorded the highest number of cancellations. Several high-traffic routes connecting the national capital with Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad and Kochi were affected. In many cases, both outbound and inbound flights on the same sector were called off.

Southern cities also saw significant spillover effects. Chennai reported cancellations on Delhi-linked services, while Bengaluru lost flights to and from Delhi, Ranchi, Goa (Mopa) and Chandigarh. Hyderabad, Coimbatore and Madurai were impacted mainly due to disruptions on routes connected to the capital.

Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh

In western India, flights at Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Goa (Mopa) were cancelled, hitting sectors such as Mumbai–Delhi, Pune–Delhi, Pune–Amritsar and Nagpur–Goa. Mopa airport in Goa also saw suspensions of services to Delhi, Bengaluru and Chandigarh.

Eastern and northeastern regions were not spared. Flights between Kolkata and Ranchi, Kolkata and Chandigarh, and Dibrugarh and Delhi were cancelled, while Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam and Ranchi reported disruptions linked to Delhi-bound services.

Sharp drop in visibility

Late on Saturday, IndiGo issued a travel advisory warning passengers of possible delays and cancellations due to dense early-morning fog in Delhi and parts of northern India. The airline said visibility could drop suddenly, impacting flight operations, and added that its teams were monitoring weather conditions closely.

Passengers have been advised to check flight status before heading to the airport, as further last-minute changes remain possible, especially for flights routed through Delhi.
