The US bond market remains under pressure, with bond prices falling and yields rising. Indian bonds are also witnessing weakness, while crude oil prices are approaching $94 a barrel. Despite these concerns, the Indian equity market is expected to open higher today.

Gift Nifty, a key indicator of the opening trend for Indian equities, closed at 24,293 on Wednesday night at GIFT City. It rose to 24,357 this morning, pointing to a positive start for the Indian market.

Bond market remains unsettled

The US Treasury market turned turbulent again after a brief respite. Bond prices fell and yields rose despite US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's assurances that the government would increase buybacks of Treasury securities.

The yield on the 30-year US Treasury bond has climbed to 5.252 percent. The market remains concerned about the country's widening fiscal deficit, despite Bessent's assurances that the deficit will be contained.

The concerns extend beyond government borrowing. Heavy corporate investment in artificial intelligence and the availability of Japanese government bonds at relatively attractive prices are also influencing global bond flows.

Persistent selling pressure in US Treasuries could spill over into equities and trigger wider financial repercussions. The renewed bond-market turbulence comes amid growing debate over whether excessive investment in AI could be creating a bubble.

US markets fall

The renewed weakness in the bond market weighed on Wall Street on Thursday. Assurances from the US Treasury Secretary that the fiscal deficit would be kept under control failed to reassure investors.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 703.84 points, or 1.32 percent, to close at 52,759.21. The S&P 500 dropped 66.82 points, or 0.87 percent, to 7,641.16, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 263.93 points, or 1 percent, to 26,213.17.

The Sensex gained 628.04 points, or 0.82 percent, to close at 77,537.72. The Nifty 50 rose 153.55 points, or 0.64 percent, to 24,231.85. The Bank Nifty advanced 256.15 points, or 0.45 percent, to 57,495.90.

Arabica coffee gained 0.03 percent to $3.283 a pound amid concerns that El Niño could reduce production.

Palm oil prices continued to rise. The market expects prices to cross 5,000 Malaysian ringgit a tonne, supported by lower production and increased use of palm oil for biodiesel in Indonesia. Palm oil gained 1.39 percent on Thursday to ₹4,961 Malaysian ringgit a tonne.
