The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is commissioning two major projects this month, specifically focusing on security and comfort. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will launch this on 26 September via an online ceremony.
India's first comprehensive safety shield
The first project is a cutting-edge Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDs) designed to secure the airport's operational area. This system includes a 12 km non-lethal electric fence, fibre optic vibration sensors, and thermal cameras. Any slight vibrations or temperature changes within the perimeter will be reported in real-time to the control centre. This is said to be the first comprehensive safety shield for India and comes at a cost of ₹30 crore. Tata Advanced Systems Limited has supplied the necessary technology for this system.
The second project involves a major upgrade to the International Terminal's lounge. The new lounge has increased in size from 14,000 sq. ft to 21,000 sq. ft, providing a more comfortable experience for passengers, especially during peak travel times. This expansion addresses a long-standing need for morespace for eligible credit and debit card holders.
CIAL recently launched the 0484 aero service, with bookings expected to begin in the second week of October. Built on the concept of 'affordable luxury', the 0484 Aero Lounge offers an exceptional premium experience for travellers and visitors at hourly rates. Named after Ernakulam's STD code, this lounge blends the rich traditions, art, backwaters, landscapes, and flora of Kerala with a modern aesthetic that reflects local culture. Spanning 50,000 square feet, it features 37 rooms, 4 suites, 3 boardrooms, 2 conference halls, a co-working space, gym, spa, library, an exclusive café lounge, and a restaurant, providing a unique experience of stylish, self-contained luxury.
