Tata Motors has launched the much-awaited Tata Sierra to take on the Hyundai Creta and other rivals in what is one of the most hotly contested segments in the country. While the new Sierra takes styling cues from the 1991 original, it has been reinvented for the modern age and is packed to the gills with features.

Here is a look at the standout features and how the Sierra stacks up against the competition.

Modern design with a nod to the past

The Tata Sierra is instantly recognisable as a modern-day Tata, featuring a connected LED light bar design at both the front and rear. The SUV looks rugged with its boxy styling and is sure to command attention on the roads.

In a nod to the original Sierra, the thick B-pillar with the signature kink remains. Additionally, the rear three-quarter glass area has been blacked out to mimic the original’s wrap-around glass styling.

Powerful new turbo-petrol engine

Tata has introduced two all-new petrol engines alongside a familiar diesel option:

1.5L Turbo-Petrol: A new engine generating 160 hp and 255 Nm of torque. It is mated exclusively to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

1.5L NA Petrol: A naturally aspirated engine delivering 106 hp and 145 Nm of torque. It is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed Dual Clutch Automatic (DCA) transmission.

1.5L Diesel: The same reliable engine found in the Tata Curvv, producing 118 hp and 280 Nm of torque. It is available with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Segment-leading space

Tata has gone all out on the interiors of the new Sierra. The standout feature is the three-screen dashboard layout, which allows the front passenger to connect via Bluetooth headphones to watch videos or play games independently.

Tata also claims segment-leading rear legroom. This is further enhanced by a "Boss Mode," allowing rear passengers to move the front passenger seat forward via a lever to free up space. True to the original Sierra’s DNA, the cabin feels airy, aided by the segment's largest panoramic sunroof. The vehicle also offers a cavernous 622-litre boot.

Other highlights

HypAR HUD: An augmented reality heads-up display that projects navigation, turn indicators, and pedestrian detection onto the windshield.

ADAS Level 2+: A safety suite with 22 key features.

Audio: A 12-speaker JBL system with a front soundbar design supporting Dolby Atmos.

Comfort: Ventilated front seats, a thigh support extender, and a 6-way powered driver seat with memory and welcome function.

Convenience: A 360-degree camera, rear-window sunshades, and powered electric tailgate.

Price and rivals

Tata has so far revealed only the starting price of the new Sierra, which begins at ₹11.49 lakh. The company is positioning the Sierra as a premium mid-size SUV, so the entry price is higher than its competitors. However, Tata claims it offers several features as standard on the base variant—features that its rivals typically reserve for their higher trims.
