Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) is set to complete one lakh connections in the state by March 2025, according to managing director Santhosh Babu. At present, 80,000 connections have been provided, though the initial target was to reach one lakh by December last year. The delay, he explained, was due to obstacles like national highway construction.

K-FON is gearing up for a larger expansion, with improved marketing strategies and even a brand ambassador. Speaking to Dhanam Online, Babu remarked that the day is not far when people will actively seek out K-FON’s services.

He also said that the increasing importance of internet connectivity, calling bandwidth a basic necessity alongside food, clothing, and shelter.

Internet for all

The K-FON project was initiated by the Kerala government with funding from KIIFB, aiming to provide affordable fibre-optic internet to every household. The project’s total cost is expected to reach ₹1,500 crore, with over ₹800 crore already invested.

At present, the service generates a monthly income of Rs 4-5 crore. K-FON has set a target of reaching an annual revenue of Rs 300 crore by the financial year 2026-27, with profitability estimated at Rs 225 crore. In the long run, Babu believes the company could even hit Rs 500 crore in revenue.

Revenue streams currently include home and government office connections, along with leased line services for businesses.

Businesses and remote areas

K-FON is also working on initiatives to support entrepreneurs in Kerala, including lower-cost internet plans and special offers for new businesses. Unlike private providers that focus on high-density areas, K-FON aims to extend services to rural and remote regions, including tribal areas. With an estimated 50 lakh families in Kerala still lacking fibre-optic connections, the goal is to bridge this gap over time.

Customer feedback, according to Babu, has been largely positive, and word-of-mouth is driving more users towards the service.

Additionally, the company plans to roll out free Wi-Fi in 4,000 locations across the state in the near future.
