Kerala will develop a comprehensive multi-modal cargo network integrating air, road, rail and inland water transport, with Cochin International Airport (CIAL) positioned as its central hub, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Saturday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the plenary session of the CIAL International Cargo Business Summit 2026, organised by CIAL in association with FICCI. The event marked the 25th anniversary of CIAL’s cargo operations.

More than an airport

The Chief Minister said CIAL is evolving beyond its role as an airport operator and is actively working to create a business-friendly ecosystem that supports Kerala’s economic growth. He noted that the proposed multi-modal connectivity would significantly enhance the state’s logistics efficiency and global trade competitiveness.

CIAL handled more than 65,000 tonnes of cargo in the last financial year, Vijayan said, adding that cargo volumes are expected to increase to around 74,000 tonnes in the current financial year. The steady growth reflects rising demand from exporters and the expanding role of Kochi as a logistics gateway for South India.

A key node in logistics network

He also highlighted CIAL’s efforts to strengthen cargo infrastructure, streamline operations and attract international freight operators, positioning the airport as a key node in India’s emerging logistics network.

The summit brought together policymakers, logistics companies, exporters, airline representatives and trade bodies to discuss opportunities, challenges and policy support needed to boost air cargo and multi-modal logistics in the region.

CIAL officials said the airport is focusing on integrated cargo solutions, digital processes and better last-mile connectivity to support Kerala’s exporters, especially in sectors such as seafood, spices, pharmaceuticals and electronics.

Cargo-led growth

The two-day summit concluded on Sunday with discussions on future investments, policy coordination and collaboration between government and industry to accelerate cargo-led growth in Kerala.
