Global Interventional Radiology Services (GIRS) has opened its first interventional radiology centre at PS Mission Hospital, Marad, Kochi, aiming to make advanced minimally invasive treatments more affordable. The facility also plans to offer free cancer screening services one day every week as part of its community healthcare initiative.
The centre was inaugurated by Harris Beeran, MP. Interventional oncology specialist Dr MC Uthappa, director of GIRS who is one of South India's pioneers in the field, attended as the chief guest. Hospital director Dr Sr Annie Sheela, medical director Dr Kunjumon Sebastian, interventional cardiologist Dr Sudheer, radiologist Dr Guido Davis, administrator Dr Shalini and GIRS Healthcare CEO Dr Prafulla TP were present.
According to Dr Uthappa, the centre will provide interventional radiology procedures for the treatment of liver cancer, stroke, vascular diseases, uterine fibroids, pelvic congestion syndrome and various urological disorders in men.
The procedures use advanced imaging technology to treat patients through minimally invasive techniques, helping reduce recovery time and hospital stay.
Dr Prafulla said the Maradu centre would offer interventional radiology procedures at costs up to 40 percent lower than those charged by many other hospitals by keeping hospital expenses low and billing patients mainly for consumables such as medicines and medical supplies.
GIRS said its specialists, Dr Dheeraj and Dr Bhavya, were part of the team that introduced Trans-Arterial Radioembolisation (TARE) treatment for liver cancer at the Malabar Cancer Centre in March 2026, making it the first government-sector hospital in Kerala to offer the procedure.
