Kerala will host a round-table discussion on August 16 to assess the fallout of the steep 50% tariff imposed by the US on Indian imports. The move has raised concerns for Kerala’s key export sectors, including seafood, spices, tea, coffee, and cashews.
Finance Minister K N Balagopal said the meeting will bring together industry experts, economists, academicians, and producers from agriculture and marine sectors to gauge the potential impact and discuss possible responses.
Balagopal stressed that the issue extends beyond state borders. He urged the central government to hold its ground against US pressure, warning that making trade concessions now could invite further demands later.
He also suggested the Centre convene a joint meeting of all affected states to frame a coordinated strategy.
The August 16 meeting is expected to focus on quantifying the risks, identifying sectors most at risk, and exploring both immediate and long-term measures to protect exporters.
While the tariff’s full effect is yet to be felt, officials say advance planning could help cushion the blow.
