The Kerala government has approved a relaxation in its monthly dry day policy, allowing star-rated hotels to serve liquor on the first day of each month if they are hosting approved events.

According to the revised liquor policy approved by the state cabinet, hotels classified as three-star and above, covering heritage, boutique, grand, and classic categories, can apply for a special permit to serve alcohol on the otherwise dry first day of the month.

The exemption is restricted to specific functions such as conferences, weddings, and receptions.

₹50,000 for approval

Eligible hotels must submit an application to the excise commissioner at least seven days before the event. A one-day licence fee of ₹50,000 will be charged for each approved event.

The revised policy does not apply to other government-declared dry days, such as those related to religious observances or elections.

The government stated that the change aims to support the tourism and hospitality sectors, particularly events and meetings that were affected by the blanket alcohol ban on the first day of every month.

Permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis and will apply only to the designated venue and date.
