The Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science (MITS), Puthenkurish in Ernakulam district, has been granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for five years.
The status empowers the institute to frame its own syllabus, introduce new courses, and conduct examinations independently while remaining affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University.
The UGC’s autonomy framework allows institutions to make faster curriculum updates and bring in industry-focused modules without waiting for central approvals.
With autonomy in place, MITS will have more flexibility to adapt teaching methods, experiment with evaluation patterns, and collaborate with industry for specialised programmes.
The UGC has been granting autonomy to select institutions across India to encourage innovation in higher education.
For MITS, the five-year window offers scope to test new academic models and explore collaborations, while continuing to follow national quality and accreditation standards.
Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) is promoted by Muthoot M. George Institute of Technology, a Section 25 Company within the Muthoot Group. It is a self-financing Engineering College, situated in the Industrial suburb of Kochi, close to the Smart City and Info Park.
