The concept of coworking spaces, which initially gained popularity in metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru, is gradually making its way to Kerala. These shared workspaces, which first emerged in urban centres such as Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, are now extending to smaller towns and even rural areas. Locations such as Thodupuzha and Angamaly have seen a rise in co-working spaces, reflecting a shift in workplace trends.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increased interest in co-working facilities as companies adopt hybrid and remote work models. Many organisations appear to be facilitating opportunities for employees, particularly those who previously worked in IT hubs outside the state, to operate closer to home. Some data suggest a rise in multinational companies renting co-working spaces in cities like Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode.
Coworking spaces typically offer a professional office environment to individuals and small teams. Facilities often include high-speed internet, conference rooms, video conferencing capabilities, reliable electricity, and cafeterias. Entrepreneurs may also find these spaces advantageous for business registration purposes, as they can use the provided address and facilities without the high costs associated with renting dedicated office spaces.
For emerging companies and startups, coworking spaces may present a cost-effective alternative to traditional office setups. Setting up an independent office can involve significant expenses, including rental deposits and maintenance costs. Coworking spaces, on the other hand, provide ready-to-use infrastructure and services, reducing operational burdens.
Kochi, for instance, hosts more than 50 coworking centres catering primarily to startups and small businesses. These spaces generally operate on a pay-per-seat basis, with options ranging from open desks to private cabins, each priced differently. While coworking facilities were initially popular among smaller teams, larger companies also seem to be exploring these spaces for their cost benefits.
Coworking service providers typically offer various packages to suit different needs. Basic amenities like power backup, air conditioning, and meeting rooms are standard, and some facilities also include refreshments. Premium coworking spaces in Kochi reportedly charge monthly rents starting from ₹6,500, with hourly rates beginning at ₹600. Virtual office services and 24-hour access are also available in certain locations.
The Technolodge initiative in Kakkur, Piravam, Ernakulam, aims to support IT and startup companies in rural areas. Established with government backing, this coworking space offers essential facilities such as high-speed internet and uninterrupted power supply at comparatively lower costs. According to sources, a single seat at Technolodge costs around ₹2,500 per month.
The Kerala state government has announced plans to support the coworking sector with its “Work Near Home” initiative. Scheduled to launch next year, the project aims to establish coworking centres across the state, beginning with Kottarakkara in Kollam district and Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district. These centres are expected to operate out of rented premises, such as the BSNL building in Kottarakkara.
An estimated ₹50 crore has been allocated for the project in the state budget, with the first phase focusing on creating facilities for approximately 1,000 users. Reports suggest that the rent for each seat will be around ₹4,000 per month. This initiative may benefit startups, freelancers, and companies offering remote work opportunities.
Coworking spaces in Kerala are evolving to meet the changing demands of the workforce. From urban hubs to rural settings, these facilities provide flexible options for individuals and organisations. While the sector is still growing, the availability of coworking spaces in diverse locations reflects a shift towards decentralised work environments.
