Back in 1990, a chemical engineer who worked with Aramco in Saudi Arabia returned for good to his hometown of Perumbavoor in Kerala's Ernakulam. He had no plan to idle away his youth and time--he to stay to fully engaged in meaningful work.

While his first choice was to set up a manufacturing plant, concerns around Kerala’s `hostile' industry climate led him to explore other avenues. Electronics retail was an emerging opportunity, and he recognised its long-term promise.

Slow, steady, honest

That instinct gave rise to Pittappillil Agencies—a name that has since grown into one of Kerala’s most trusted electronics retail chain. Starting with a single store in Perumbavoor, Pittappillil now has 84 outlets across 70 towns in Kerala. Despite stiff competition from multinationals and online giants, it has carved out a space defined by reliability, fair pricing, and customer-first service.

Peter did not rush expansion. For a decade, he focused on understanding the market, building credibility, and earning trust. “Rapid growth was never the goal. I wanted to build something honest—something people could rely on. Today, I can say with confidence that 99.9% of our customers trust Pittappillil for that reason,” he says.

In a crowded market

In a sector flooded with flashy offers and price wars, Pittappillil stands apart through consistent service and ethical business. The brand's foundation, integrity, quality, and customer care has turned first-time shoppers into lifelong patrons. Even as tech advances and AI reshape customer habits, Peter believes that trust will remain the biggest differentiator.

“When a new player enters the market, there’s a flurry of interest. But within six months, customers go back. They realise transparency and service matter more than discounts,” he observes.

To future-proof the brand, Pittappillil has taken bold steps—one of them being a strategic partnership with Optima, a 30-year-old appliance brand with strong roots in the GCC markets.

By integrating Optima’s Indian operations, Pittappillil is not only expanding its product line but also strengthening its backend—from warehousing to service delivery. This year, coolers under the Optima brand will be launched, with plans to scale further once the Pittappillil showroom count crosses 100.

Towards becoming Pvt Ltd Co

Pittappillil’s journey is not just one of commercial success. It’s also about building deeper value—within the organisation and outside. The company is transitioning into a private limited entity, a step towards professional discipline and long-term scalability. While a public issue is not ruled out, the current priority remains consolidating its rural footprint and sustaining its value-driven approach.

Peter has identified five focus areas for the next phase: Establishing Pittappillil as a socially conscious brand; strengthening emotional connections with customers; exploring ventures like healthcare that align with the company’s ethos; maintaining product quality and innovation; and, ensuring financial stability for sustainable growth.

The leadership circle now includes the next generation—his daughter, son-in-law, and nephew—bringing fresh energy while staying true to the founding values. Their entry marks a smooth transition, blending tradition with modern strategies to stay relevant in an evolving market.

Beyond retail

Given the number of doctors in the family, Peter is also considering forays into healthcare—though plans remain exploratory. True to form, the approach would prioritise trust, community service, and value addition.

Community engagement has always been close to Pittappillil’s heart. The company has supported the treatment of numerous patients, in association with the Heart Care Foundation and Kerala Cancer Care Society. It has also partnered with Olympian P. R. Sreejesh to form football teams in schools across Kerala, promoting sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles among youth.

Internally, Pittappillil runs a welfare scheme that covers medical expenses for over 6,000 members, including employees and their families. On the sustainability front, it has initiated e-waste recycling and is gradually transitioning to solar energy across its showrooms.

Legacy and leadership

Peter Paul’s leadership style is marked by humility, quiet strength, and a deep sense of purpose. Inspired by visionaries like C V Jacob of Synthite and Kochouseph Chittilappilly of V-Guard, he believes business must serve society. His legacy is one of trust—not just in products, but in the way a business treats people.

At a time when many are chasing fast success, Peter Paul’s story reminds us that slow, steady, and sincere wins not just the race—but the hearts of generations.
