From a small village, Signtek, a printing company, has gained attention for producing large banners and hoardings using modest equipment. Every business story begins like this and what's new in it, right? A milestone for this company was the creation of Kerala's first flex hoarding, commissioned by the renowned automobile brand Mercedes-Benz. The outstanding quality of this print set a new standard for future projects and prompted Signtek’s Managing Partner P.L. Yacob to visit the Kochi International Stadium to evaluate its impact. Signtek's goal was to showcase its capability to manage large-scale projects independently, without the need for external resources.elebrating 25 years of innovation and success, Signtek has consistently met customer needs while adapting to the dynamic landscape of printing.

Starting its operations on Paramara Road in Ernakulam North, Signtek played a crucial role in transforming the area into a hub for printing businesses—earning the nickname "Printing Street." While many companies emerged in this vibrant sector, none embraced innovation quite like Signtek, which has consistently outpaced competition in digital printing advancements.

The rise of Signtek

Two decades ago, anyone travelling through Ernakulam would be captivated by the vibrant hoardings and billboards that adorned the skyline. This visual spectacle soon became a common sight, even in rural areas. Then, Signtek emerged as a frontrunner by introducing large-format printing, transforming the aesthetics of Kerala’s urban environments.

This evolution marked a pivotal moment in the company’s journey. Over the years, Signtek has demonstrated an impressive ability to anticipate changes within the industry and has proactively adapted to meet these challenges.

Pioneering the large format revolution

Signtek was a trailblazer in digital printing, particularly in large formats. Previously, photo prints were limited to sizes of up to 12 by 8 inches. However, Signtek broke new ground by offering expansive banners and posters, leading a large format revolution that initially took root indoors before making its way outdoors.

From visiting cards to signage: The diverse offerings of Signtek

In 2016, Signtek expanded its portfolio to include commercial printing services, such as brochures, books, booklets, and visiting cards. Over its 25-year history, the company has built a robust client base, serving over 25,000 customers across diverse sectors, including mobile service providers, jewellers, textile manufacturers, and construction firms.

Signtek has established itself as a comprehensive provider in the printing sector, offering an extensive range of products that cater to various business needs. From visiting cards to large-scale signage, the company’s capabilities includes decorative printing, labels, outdoor and indoor signage, billboards, glass wall decorations, wallpapers, banners, backdrops, and fleet graphics.

Commitment to consistent innovation

The digital printing landscape is characterised by rapid technological advancements, with new innovations emerging every six months. Partner Sebi Thomas said, "The importance of timely implementation; failure to adopt these changes within a year can result in a competitive disadvantage. This reality necessitates substantial investment and a commitment to ongoing education."

Signtek has successfully navigated this landscape by swiftly adopting new technologies. The company actively participates in global exhibitions, ensuring it remains at the forefront of industry developments. Many of its advanced printing machines are imported from international markets, allowing Signtek to leverage cutting-edge technology.

For instance, LED UV printing technology was introduced in foreign markets in 2011, and Signtek was quick to bring it to Kerala the following year. “This proactive approach led to a shift from solvent-based inks to more environmentally friendly water-based inks. As of 2022-2023, this technology has reached various locations throughout Kerala, demonstrating Signtek’s commitment to sustainability and quality,” the team noted.

Sebi Thomas also highlights the company’s philosophy of never compromising on quality, even in the face of rising costs. He added, "In the early years, sourcing materials such as ink and cartridges was challenging, with few suppliers in India. Signtek relied on imports from places like Hong Kong. However, the landscape has improved now, with most required materials now readily available within Kerala."

When the world revolves around sustainability and eco-friendly practices, Signtek also moves towards this way. Speaking about the nature-friendly initiatives, the team stated, “As Signtek marks its Silver Jubilee, the company is taking strides towards becoming more environmentally friendly. This year, it has introduced government-approved Polyethylene (JRI)-based materials for printing, alongside a transition to water-based inks. With these changes, Signtek is currently operating with 75% environmental sustainability, and it aims to achieve 100% social responsibility in the near future.”

Comprehensive printing services under one roof

While Signtek offers its services throughout Kerala, its office remains in Ernakulam. The company currently operates in approximately 6,000 square feet of owned and leased space, but plans are underway to relocate to a new facility that will span 15,000 square feet over four floors. This new building, located at the beginning of Paramara Road, is designed to consolidate all printing services under one roof.

Looking ahead, Signtek also intends to expand into package printing, which will include wrappers and pouches, further diversifying its offerings.

Business between buddies

Signtek’s story began in 1999 when four friends from Srimulanagaram, Aluva, ventured into the printing industry with the establishment of Signtek. At a time when digital printing was relatively unknown, the company played a crucial role in the growth of this sector in Kerala. As the industry transitioned to digital, Signtek swiftly adapted, ensuring its relevance in a rapidly evolving market.

Following the unfortunate passing of one partner in 2019, the company now moves forward with three managing partners: P.P. Ousepachan, P.L. Jacob, and Sebi Thomas. Their harmonious collaboration has ensured smooth operations, with the second generation also beginning to take on official roles within the company.

Acknowledging 'Title Graphics'

In 1998, the entrepreneurial journey of this friendship group began with 'Title Graphics,' which initially focused on CNC-based digital signboard fabrication. The success of this venture paved the way for their entry into the printing industry. Title Graphics now operates from a 20,000-square-foot facility in Kalamasery and employs around 150 staff members.

Specialising in signboards and logos for corporate showrooms, Title Graphics serves major clients across South India, including renowned names such as Hyundai, Mahindra, Jio BP, Nayara, Bharat Petroleum, and Reliance Industries. The company is known for its high-quality CNC cutting on handmade signboards.
Looking to the future, Managing Director P.P. Ousepachan said, “We are planning to expand Title Graphics into the showroom furniture segment for vehicles,” while he also holds the position of State President of the Signprinting Industries Associatio

Adoption of AI: A promising era for the printing sector

Sebi Thomas is optimistic about the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the printing industry. He believes that AI will enhance the sector by enabling customers to create their own designs effortlessly. With AI tools available, individuals can craft personalised designs and send them directly for printing, all from the comfort of their offices.

This innovation not only streamlines the design process but also empowers clients to tailor their materials to better suit their needs and preferences. By facilitating easier access to customisation, AI is expected to accelerate growth in the commercial sector, making the printing experience more efficient and user-friendly.

As the industry adapts to these technological advancements, Signtek is poised to harness the benefits of AI, ensuring it remains at the forefront of printing solutions in an increasingly digital world.
