Indian equity and commodity markets will take a holiday on Thursday to celebrated Christmas. Trading will remain closed on both the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in equities, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives for the entire day. There will be no settlement activity either.
The commodity derivatives market will also remain shut, with trading suspended in both the morning and evening sessions on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). Normal trading across the BSE, NSE and MCX will resume on December 26.
While domestic markets are closed, major global markets including the US and parts of Europe will remain open, which could influence sentiment when Indian trading resumes on Friday. Analysts expect volumes to remain thin in the year-end week amid the holiday season and cautious positioning by investors.
Meanwhile, the NSE has released its trading holiday calendar for 2026. The Indian stock markets will observe 15 trading holidays during 2026, starting with Republic Day on January 26. Of these, four holidays fall on Saturdays or Sundays, when markets are otherwise closed, effectively reducing the number of mid-week trading disruptions.
Investors are advised to plan positions and settlements accordingly, especially ahead of long weekends and holiday-clustered weeks in the coming year.
