A 75-year-old doctor from Thrissur has successfully undergone a liver transplant at Meitra Hospital in Kozhikode.

The hospital said he is the oldest patient in Kerala to successfully undergo the procedure. The patient had been suffering from end-stage liver disease for several years, and transplantation was identified as the only definitive treatment as his condition worsened.

Fitness assessed before transplant

The medical team was initially cautious about undertaking the surgery because of the patient’s age. However, a multidisciplinary evaluation found that he was otherwise physically fit and capable of undergoing the procedure, according to the hospital.

“The transplant was successfully performed, and the patient is recovering well,” said Dr Noushif Medappil, liver transplant surgeon at Meitra Hospital.

The patient’s family thanked the transplant team and hospital staff for the care provided during the treatment.

Dr Jijo V Cherian, Medical Director of Meitra Hospital, said the successful outcome carries profound implications for the future of organ transplantation.
