Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s largest state-run telecom operator, has launched the testing phase for its indigenously developed 5G technology. The tests are being conducted in key areas across Delhi. This is part of BSNL’s strategic plan to enhance national connectivity and to compete more effectively with private telecom giants in delivering advanced mobile services.
The company has shared a video update on its official social media channels, showcasing the progress of the 5G testing. This development marks the beginning of a new era in mobile communication for India, with BSNL aiming to offer customers lightning-fast 5G services upon completion of the testing phase.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently noted that BSNL has established over 15,000 4G sites under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign, which are set to be converted to 5G soon. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has also indicated the imminent launch of 5G services by sharing images of a 5G SIM card. Alongside these developments,
Universal SIM
BSNL has introduced its New Generation Over-the-Air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform in an infrastructure upgrade. Developed in collaboration with Pyro Holdings Pvt. Ltd., this platform supports both 4G and 5G technologies and is designed to enhance connectivity and service quality for BSNL customers nationwide.
A key feature of this platform is its flexibility, allowing BSNL customers to choose mobile numbers and replace SIMs without geographical restrictions. This upgrade positions BSNL at the forefront of telecom innovation in India, reflecting its commitment to improving user experience.
1 lakh new towers
BSNL’s 5G rollout is accompanied by an extensive expansion of its 4G infrastructure. The company plans to install over 100,000 towers by March 2025, with 80,000 expected to be operational by October 2024. This large-scale deployment aims to provide better coverage and more reliable services to millions of BSNL subscribers across the country.
Revival package of Rs 89,000 cr
BSNL’s ambitious upgrades are supported by the government’s third revival package of Rs 89,047 crore. This package includes the allocation of 4G and 5G spectrum through equity infusion, boosting the company's ability to compete in the rapidly evolving telecom sector.
With these advancements and financial backing, BSNL is poised to play a crucial role in India’s digital future. The company has already rolled out its 4G services nationwide and is in the process of testing live TV services through its BSNL FTTH network in Madhya Pradesh. This service is currently being offered free of charge during the testing phase and represents a pioneering initiative in the country.
