Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL)'s passenger terminals and cargo buildings have received the IGBC Net Zero Energy (Operations Pre-Certified) rating. The recognition was announced at the 23rd Green Building Congress held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry along with the Indian Green Building Council.
The certification covers all the three terminals, along with both import and export cargo buildings. The IGBC net zero energy rating is among India’s key benchmarks for buildings that aim to balance the energy they consume with energy produced from renewable sources over a year. In simple terms, such buildings are designed to generate as much power as they use, largely through clean energy.
The “operations pre-certified” status indicates that these airport buildings already meet the required performance standards at the operational stage and are considered on track to achieve full net zero energy status. The assessment process looks at how efficiently energy is used across daily operations, including air-conditioning systems, lighting, equipment efficiency and overall passenger comfort, while reducing dependence on conventional power.
The honour was received by S. Suhas, managing director of CIAL, and Manu G., airport director, at the event.
