A liquor brand born out of a Malayali brain in the UK has now made its way to Kerala. Named Manavatty, the drink has reportedly found a decent market abroad and is now eyeing shelves at home.
The brand traces its roots to John Xavier, a native of Kadavanthra in Kochi, who launched a liquor manufacturing company in the UK under the name Manavatty in 2019.
Though the company was registered that year, production only started around three years later. The drink is currently made by London Baron Ltd, a firm registered in the UK.
According to the company, all manufacturing processes are done in line with the UK government’s food safety standards. They also say the drink is made entirely from grains, contains 44% alcohol, and has no artificial additives.
Manavatty was available in the UK for a while. Now, it's entered the Kerala market for the first time and will be available at the duty-free shop in Cochin International Airport.
There’s no official word yet on whether the brand will enter state-run liquor shops or private outlets across Kerala. But going by the move to start at the airport, it looks like the makers are testing the waters before expanding further.
Manavatty joins a growing list of liquor brands floated by Malayalis abroad. Earlier, brands like Mandakini beer in Canada and Komban in Ireland were said to have found some success in their respective countries.
