Hyderabad-based Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), one of India’s healthcare chains, is planning to set up a hospital in Kochi and Kozhikode in next two year. The company aims to establish a network of hospitals across Kerala, with a focus on providing affordable healthcare.

KIMS has proposed to develop a 3,000-bed hospital network in Kerala over the next five years, which will involve both setting up new hospitals and acquiring existing ones.

As part of its first step in Kerala, KIMS has taken over Kannur Srichand Hospital, which has already started operations. In addition, KIMS plans to establish a fully equipped oncology and transplant centre there, and a 350-bed hospital in Thrissur focused on transplant services. The group has also signed an operation and management agreement with Westfort Hospital in Thrissur, where development works are underway.

The company has plans for further growth, including the development of healthcare facilities in key districts. .

Future plans

Future acquisitions are also planned in districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kottayam, and Idukki. All new units will be based on the “asset-light model,” according to the company.

An asset-light business model focuses on minimising the amount of capital invested in assets. In financial terms, this means that the company generates a high level of revenue relative to the capital tied up in assets. Finance experts often describe such companies as having a high asset turnover ratio.

KIMS Group currently operates over 16 hospitals with more than 5,000 beds across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka.

It's important to have health insurance

The company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Dr. Bhaskar Rao, highlighted the importance of health insurance, saying, “Health insurance is essential nowadays, and everyone should be prepared for it,” adding that he himself holds a health insurance policy despite having his own hospital.

Farhan Yasin, CEO of the Kerala Cluster, also commented on the state’s investment-friendly environment, stating, “Kerala is one of the most investor-friendly states in India.” He added that the expansion would help raise the standard of healthcare in the region.
