Nvidia Corp. has struck an agreement to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, a move that could reshape the future of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The deal, structured in stages, will see Nvidia deploy vast computing systems to help OpenAI train and run next-generation AI models on its path to developing super-intelligence.

A 10 GW leap in AI power

Both companies announced on Monday that they have signed a letter of intent to deploy 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI’s upcoming AI infrastructure. The massive build-out will be designed to handle the computing intensity required to power breakthroughs like ChatGPT, which is already used by around 700 million people weekly.

“Nvidia and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT,” said Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive of Nvidia, in a statement. “This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward—deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”

Equity and phased investment

According to Bloomberg, Nvidia will receive equity in OpenAI as part of the arrangement. The first phase of the investment—worth $10 billion—will be triggered once the first gigawatt of computing power is online. The full $100 billion commitment is expected to roll out in stages.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s co-founder and chief executive, highlighted the strategic importance of compute power in shaping the future economy. “Everything starts with compute. Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilise what we are building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs,” he said.

The first phase of deployment is expected in the second half of 2026 and will use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform.

AI alliance

The partnership cements OpenAI’s reliance on Nvidia as its preferred compute and networking partner, integrating Nvidia’s hardware strength with OpenAI’s software leadership. This deal complements existing collaborations that the two companies have with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate—an AI supercomputer project.

Nvidia, the prominent chipmaker in the world, has aggressively leveraged its financial and technological dominance to keep its GPUs at the centre of AI development. Securing OpenAI as a long-term partner ensures its leadership position at a time when demand for computing resources is exploding.

OpenAI has struggled in the past to meet the soaring compute requirements for its products, particularly during new releases. By partnering with Nvidia on such a vast scale, the company aims to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure it can keep pace with user demand while pursuing new research frontiers.
