Amazon India, already a huge player in e-commerce sector, is getting ready to enter the fast-growing quick commerce market, which focuses on delivering groceries and daily essentials in a flash. This new service, reportedly called Tez, could launch as soon as December 2024 or early 2025, according to reports.

The huge market value

Quick commerce is becoming a major industry, with companies like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart leading the charge. The sector is expected to be worth nearly USD 7 billion (59 lakh crore rupees) by next year, and according to a Morgan Stanley report, it could even outpace food delivery by 2026 in terms of gross order value (GOV). Projections suggest that the market could grow to between $25 billion and $55 billion by 2030, driven by high-frequency, high-value users.

The plan of action

Amazon is looking to catch up with these competitors by setting up its own system of quick deliveries, starting with groceries. The company is building dark stores (small warehouses), managing stock, and improving its delivery network to ensure fast service.

Amazon was initially planning to launch Tez in 2025, but the timeline has been sped up. The service could launch during Amazon India’s annual event, Smbhav, in December. Amazon is also hiring people specifically for this new project.

By joining in, Amazon will be competing with other big companies, including Flipkart, which recently launched its Minutes service, and BigBasket, which has seen major success in the quick commerce space.
