Major airlines including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued travel advisories as dense fog and poor visibility continue to disrupt flight operations across parts of north and east India, raising the risk of delays and cancellations during the busy holiday travel period.

Passengers travelling via Delhi, Chandigarh and Varanasi have been advised to check flight status before leaving for the airport, as weather conditions remain unpredictable and visibility levels low.

Air India warns of cascading delays

Air India said dense fog over the next few days could impact flight schedules at its Delhi hub and several airports in northern and eastern India, with knock-on effects across its network.

“Over the next few days, potential dense fog conditions resulting in poor visibility may impact flight operations at our primary hub in Delhi, and a few airports in northern and eastern India, with a cascading effect in some other cities,” the airline said in its advisory.

The airline urged passengers, especially those travelling during the holiday season, to verify flight status on its official website before heading to the airport.

IndiGo warning

IndiGo issued a separate advisory highlighting sharp visibility drops in Chandigarh, which have already led to flight cancellations as a safety precaution.

“Due to dense fog in Chandigarh, visibility has reduced drastically, impacting flight operations. As a precaution, some flights have been cancelled through the day to prioritise safety and help minimise extended waiting at the airport,” the airline said.

IndiGo said its airport teams are working continuously to manage operations and keep passengers informed as conditions change.

SpiceJet cautions passengers

SpiceJet also warned of possible disruptions to flights operating to and from Varanasi, citing poor visibility caused by adverse weather conditions.

“Due to bad weather (poor visibility) at Varanasi (VNS), all departures and arrivals, along with consequential flights, may be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status,” the airline said.

What travellers should do

--Check flight status on the airline’s official website or app before leaving home

--Allow extra travel time to reach the airport

--Monitor airline alerts for real-time updates

--Be prepared for last-minute delays or cancellations, especially during early morning and late-night hours

With fog conditions expected to persist, airlines have cautioned that schedules may change at short notice, making advance checks essential for travellers over the coming days.
