Fish watching may not be your idea of a good time, but it can give you as much thrill as bird watching. For, it will open your eyes to the myriad species living in the sea waters.

At a time when huge numbers of marine species are facing existential threats from climate change and sea warming, Kochi's Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has launched an initiative called Fish Walk that can give you an idea of what you can expect underwater.

The Fish Walk is part of a CMFR effort to popularise marine biodiversity education and create a sense of the sea in people's minds. "Those who are interested in fishes and other marine organisms, like crustaceans,  molluscs and so many other species of marine biodiversity will benefit from the Fish Walk," Mirium Paul, a scientist at the CMFI, said. Those who join the Fish Walk, like students, scientists, and interested laypeople, could also get a sense of what the CMFRI does, she added.

Meet marine experts

The walk will provide opportunities for fish enthusiasts to join scientists and experts on field trips to marine fish landing centres to watch and experience marine biodiversity. Participants can learn about the diverse marine organisms and participate in data collection surveys. This invaluable experience will provide a deeper understanding of the marine ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts.

“Fish Walk is a landmark initiative in line with the citizen science approach that promises to inspire and educate the public about the wonders of marine life”, CMFRI director Grinson George noted.

“This opportunity will be used to impart useful scientific knowledge about marine biodiversity to the people. Fish Walk also aims to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by the fisheries sector. In addition, this is an attempt to unite people who are interested in fish and marine biodiversity. By involving citizens in marine scientific research, CMFRI aims to foster a participatory approach for marine biodiversity and promote its conservation”, Dr George said.
