Donald Trump has thanked India after a road near the US consulate in Hyderabad was renamed Donald Trump Avenue, describing it as an unprecedented honour and saying he was the first US president to receive such recognition.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump shared a photograph of the unveiling ceremony and wrote: "The new Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, India — The first US President to ever be honoured in this way. Thank you! President DONALD J. TRUMP."
The Telangana government officially renamed the stretch of road, previously known as US Consulate Road, earlier this week as part of the Freedom 250 celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Located in Nanakramguda in Hyderabad's Financial District, the road runs alongside the US consulate general and is surrounded by the campuses of major American technology companies, including Microsoft, Google and Amazon.
According to the Telangana government, the renaming is intended to strengthen Hyderabad's global identity while reflecting the growing strategic, economic and investment partnership between India and the US.
The commemorative plaque was unveiled by Telangana deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, US ambassador to India Sergio Gor and US consul general Laura Williams in the presence of senior government officials, diplomats and industry representatives.
During the ceremony, the US ambassador described the renaming as a symbol of the rapidly expanding India-US partnership, highlighting cooperation in technology, aerospace, defence and investment.
The proposal to rename the road was first announced by Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy in December 2025. He had then said the move would honour the longstanding relationship between India and the US while recognising Hyderabad's emergence as a global technology and business hub.
The development comes against the backdrop of improving diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Washington. Earlier this month, Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, where they discussed bilateral issues including trade, tariffs and strategic cooperation.
Despite differences over trade tariffs, oil sanctions and the deaths of Indian seafarers in a recent Gulf conflict, Trump praised Modi after the meeting, calling him a tough negotiator and expressing confidence in the future of India-US relations. He also said ongoing trade discussions reflected the expanding partnership between the two countries.
The road renaming follows another US outreach initiative in India earlier this year, when auto-rickshaws in New Delhi carried posters of Trump as part of the US embassy's Freedom 250 campaign celebrating 250 years of American independence. The campaign later drew criticism after the deaths of three Indian mariners in a US military strike in the Gulf of Oman, prompting some drivers to remove the posters in protest.
