As part of the India's strategy to achieve an export target of $2 trillion by 2030, the Indian government is considering a new scheme to promote the 'Made in India' label, aiming to bring the country's brand image in global markets. As per government sources, a high-level committee is currently examining the details of this proposal.
To promote 'Made in India' as a global brand, the government plans to launch extensive branding campaigns, which will focus on select products where India has shown potential, as well as traditional sectors.
The goal of the initiative is to establish a strong brand identity for India, similar to the well-known 'Made in Japan' or 'Made in Switzerland' labels. These labels evoke specific associations, such as Swiss watches, chocolates, and banking. One of the senior officials noted, "We want that for India too.”
Quality is the key
Discussions are ongoing about whether to tailor the scheme for specific sectors where India excels, such as textiles. According to experts, product quality is the key to promote Brand India.
At present, the India Brand Equity Foundation works to raise international awareness of the 'Made in India' label. This trust, established by the Department of Commerce, helps disseminate knowledge about Indian products and services in overseas markets.
What is 'Made in India' Label?
The Made in India Label Scheme aims to boost and support the production of goods within India, encouraging domestic industries and providing consumers with clear information about the origin of their purchases. Manufacturers and producers who fully manufacture or assemble their products in India are eligible to use this label.
To apply, manufacturers can submit their applications online through the official portal, including the necessary documents and product details. Once their application is verified and approved, they will receive permission to display the label on their products. To obtain the label, products must comply with specific quality and manufacturing standards set by relevant regulatory bodies in India, which may differ based on the product category.
