The Kerala government has begun mapping all sports assets in the state as part of a comprehensive plan to revamp the sector, according to a TNIE report. Grounds, turfs, coaching centres, coaches and students are being brought under a single exercise aimed at identifying gaps and streamlining resources, sports department officials said.
The project, expected to gain full momentum by November, is designed to provide data on existing facilities, infrastructure requirements, coaching irregularities and the potential of each resource. Officials described the mapping as the first stage of a wider restructuring effort.
Geospatial mapping and real-time data collection are being used to carry out the project, with the Kerala Startup Mission providing support.
The department also plans to build a digital database and dashboard to monitor day-to-day activities at sports facilities. According to the officials quoted in the news report, the platform will be developed by Keltron.
Officials said the dashboard will help detect underutilised resources and allow redistribution of facilities and deployment of coaches wherever necessary. Panchayat-level officers have been tasked with identifying assets and coordinating the mapping.
The second stage of the project is expected to shift focus to athletes. Individual profiles will be created to track competitions, performances and milestones.
Officials are also considering a card system that could enable athletes registered with the department to use any mapped facility across the state.
The department acknowledged the exercise will be time-consuming but said it is expected to improve the efficiency and reach of Kerala’s sports ecosystem in the long run.
