The world is rapidly shifting towards artificial intelligence (AI)-driven systems, and the healthcare sector is no exception. According to Muralee Thummarukudy, a global expert on crisis management who works at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Bonn, Germany, AI is playing a growing role in addressing medical challenges.

Speaking at the Dhanam Healthcare Summit held at Le Meridien Convention Centre in Kochi, Thummarukudy pointed out that AI is now a practical solution for many problems, and medical science is steadily becoming more technology-driven. However, he noted that doctors have traditionally been hesitant to embrace new technology.

Medical tourism

One of the pressing concerns in Kerala’s healthcare sector in the near future, he said, would be the shortage of skilled nurses, especially in operating theatres and other critical areas. This trend was not limited to Kerala or India.

In many advanced western countries, he noted, it took a long time to get an appointment with medical professionals. For instance, in Germany, getting an appointment with a dentist could take up to two months. In view of this, India, particularly Kerala, could gain from opportunities in medical tourism, he said. With increasing global demand for quality healthcare, the country could establish itself as a major destination for international patients.

Thummarukudy also highlighted the possibility of another global pandemic similar to COVID-19. Scientists and medical experts were preparing for such an event to ensure a better response.

The discussion at the summit highlighted how AI and other technological advancements are set to transform healthcare, bringing both opportunities and challenges for professionals in the field.
