Following concerns expressed by electric vehicle (EV) owners about inadequate charging facilities in the State, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced an initiative to scale up its EV charging infrastructure. This is in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a global non-profit organisation focused on carbon-free energy solutions.

Founded in 1982, RMI aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy. The partnership follows an expression of interest by RMI’s Indian arm.

KSEB’s EV Accelerator Cell

The collaboration is expected to provide technical assistance to KSEB’s EV Accelerator Cell, which oversees the coordination of EV charging stations across the state. The RMI will help study the necessary adjustments to the power grid, develop an infrastructure dashboard, and streamline procedures for the installation and operation of charging stations.

KSEB officials indicated that existing projects aimed at improving EV infrastructure have not met their objectives. By leveraging RMI’s expertise, the board hopes to identify and address challenges faced by entrepreneurs and operators in the sector.

The revenue potential for KSEB

KSEB is also considering the revenue potential from EV users. The electricity board plans to develop an action plan that takes into account the needs of consumers, aiming to establish a more effective network of charging stations in Kerala.

The initiative comes at a time when the Indian government, through Niti Aayog and various state enterprises, is intensifying efforts to promote electric vehicles as part of its broader environmental goals.
