The Malayalam film industry, which saw impressive revenue of Rs 800 crore in the first four months of this year, now finds itself grappling with a severe setback.

The ongoing fallout from the Hema Committee report has triggered a series of disruptions, putting the industry in disarray.

Key brands have retracted advertisements featuring stars implicated in sexual misconduct allegations, stemming from the Hema Committee findings. This has halted several upcoming film projects, with many postponed indefinitely.

Aspiring producers, especially newcomers, are stepping back from production amid growing uncertainty. Among the retreating are non-resident Indians (NRIs) who entered the industry driven by a passion for Malayalam cinema. In 2023 alone, over 160 films were released, many backed by new producers, yet most have incurred losses, with some now reconsidering their investments.

One such case involves a prominent Malayali expatriate, who had invested in a film directed by an iconic actor from the 1980s and 90s. Scheduled for release during Onam, the project has now been delayed due to the ongoing controversies. This producer, a well-known figure in cultural circles, has chosen to withdraw from the film industry entirely, wary of the risks.

Impact on low-budget films

The withdrawal of key producers has significantly impacted low-budget films. At least three projects featuring emerging actors have been delayed, despite having confirmed shooting schedules. Discussions surrounding new ventures have similarly stalled. While seasoned stars may weather the storm, the industry veterans warn that newcomers are facing significant hurdles.

After starting 2024 on a strong note, with a series of box office successes driving revenues to Rs 800 crore, the Malayalam film industry is now struggling under the weight of the Hema Committee revelations.

Onam releases stalled

Traditionally, the Onam festival season is marked by blockbuster releases starring major names like Mohanlal, Mammootty, Dileep, and Prithviraj. However, this year has seen a significant lull.

Although a few films, including Ajayante Randam Moshanam with Tovino Thomas in a triple role, Antony Varghese Pepe’s Kondal, and Asif Ali’s Kishkindha Kaanadam are slated for release, the landscape is quieter than usual.

Initial reports hinted at releases of Barroz starring Mohanlal and Mammootty's Bazooka during Onam, but they have been postponed.

Theatre owners are also concerned that the persistent controversies may dissuade audiences from returning to cinemas, further straining revenues.

Police investigation

A number of prominent actors and directors of the Malayalam film industry are facing police investigation on allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

Kerala’s south zone police inspector-general Sparjan Kumar, who heads a special investigation team probing the allegations told new agency Reuters recently that they have received 16 complaints from women in the film industry.
