Mumbai: A doctor in Mumbai is the latest victim of a ‘share market scam’ involving deepfake video.

A deepfake video of Mukesh Ambani on Instagram misled the victim and she allegedly lost over ₹7 lakh.

News agency ANI reported that the Mumbai Police has registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Income Tax Act.

The 54-year-old doctor lost more than ₹7 Lakhs in the share market fraud between April 15-17.

The doctor alleged that a deepfake reel of industrialist Mukesh Ambani that she saw on Instagram regarding investment influenced her.

In her statement she said she was added to a WhatsApp group through a link, assured of profits, directed to download an app, and instructed to deposit money into various accounts.

Deepfake frauds

Recently Infosys founder Narayana Murthy’s deepfake videos ‘endorsing trading app’ had gone viral. Murthy clarified that on the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter) that some web portals claimed that he invested in automated trading applications.

Others who faced the threat of deepfake videos included industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata. A deepfake video by an Instagram user showed him giving investment advice.

Famous personalities who were all targeted by deepfake videos in the past included popular actors Priyanka Chopra, Aliya Bhatt, Rashmika Mandanna and Norah Fatehi. Deepfake videos had also tried to cash in on the popularity of renowned cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.

Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit (GPAI) 2023 that “deepfake is a challenge for the whole world... AI tools going into the hands of terrorists are also a big threat.”
