OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has confirmed that it will set up its first office in India. The company said the office will be located in Delhi and that it has already begun hiring a local team.

The move comes at a time when India has become one of OpenAI’s biggest markets. According to the company, India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market worldwide and has seen a fourfold increase in weekly active users in the past year. India is also counted among the top five developer markets on OpenAI and is home to the largest population of students using ChatGPT.

Study mode finds users in India

OpenAI noted that its recently introduced Study Mode feature with GPT-5 has gained strong traction among Indian users, although no specific numbers were disclosed.

Ahead of the office announcement, OpenAI had also rolled out an India-specific ChatGPT Go plan priced at ₹399. The plan is pitched as a more affordable option for higher usage, compared to the existing Plus and Pro subscriptions.

Local push, Global Interest

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, in a release, said India’s tech talent and developer ecosystem made it a natural choice for expansion. He described the new office and local hiring as an important first step in making advanced AI more accessible in the country.

The government has also welcomed the announcement. IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the decision showed India’s growing leadership in AI adoption and tied it to the IndiaAI Mission, which is focused on building a trusted and inclusive AI ecosystem.
