According to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Kerala now has 99 internet connections per 100 people as of March 31, 2025. That’s a significant leap from 94 in 2023–24 and 89 in 2022–23. It also places the state well above the national average of 68 connections per 100 people.
The state recorded 248 internet connections per 100 people in its rural pockets — compared to just 62 in urban areas.
For every person in rural Kerala, there are more than two internet connections. Some of that may include multiple connections per household or individuals using both mobile and broadband, but even then, it’s an unusual pattern compared to the rest of India, where urban centres typically dominate.
The figures suggest that internet has become deeply embedded in rural life — from education to payments and entertainment. Whether it’s because of higher digital literacy or aggressive local telecom outreach, something is clearly working outside the city limits.
In total, Kerala has around 3.65 crore internet connections, split almost evenly between rural (1.87 crore) and urban (1.78 crore) areas. For context, India as a whole has roughly 96.91 crore connections.
It’s worth noting that these numbers don’t necessarily mean every individual is connected — many may own more than one SIM, while others might use shared access. But the trend points to widespread availability, especially in the state's less densely populated zones
