In a rare political comeback in US history, Donald Trump is returning to the White House four years after his ignominious departure in 2020.
Mr Trump been elected to become the 47th President of the United States with a convincing majority in popular votes as well as electoral college votes.
"America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate," Mr Trump told a cheering crowd of followers in Florida after he declared a `magnificent victory.'
Despite all odds, the 78-year-old Trump, facing multiple scandals, including rape charges and sexual abuses, over his career, has managed to seize the presidency of the world's most powerful country. He faced multiple court cases--criminal and civil--a conviction and a sentencing. And he survived two alleged murder attempts within a short time during the campaign.
By midday (IST), it was abundantly clear that Mr Trump would win this election. By mid-morning, electoral signals pointed to a Trump comeback and that the scandal-scarred real estate tycoon would be only the second man in US history to serve two non-consecutive terms as president.
The gap in the popular vote was a remarkable four percentage points, with Donald Trump at 51.2% and Kamala Harris around 47.2%.
All promises will be kept
"I will govern by a simple model, promises made, promises kept. We’re going to keep our promises. Nothing will stop me from keeping my word," he said in an address to jubilant supporters in Florida State where he has been living for four years after leaving the White House.
"To you, the people, we will make America safe, strong, prosperous, powerful, and free again. And I’m asking every citizen all across our land to join me in this noble and righteous endeavor. That’s what it is. It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us. It’s time to unite, and we’re going to try.”
