WhatsApp to roll out new voice chat tools; Here’s how it works

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, continues to innovate with its latest updates, introducing two highly anticipated features that promise to enhance user experience. These updates include a new voice chat mode for Meta AI and a voice message transcription feature, both of which aim to make communication more seamless and intuitive.

Voice chat mode for Meta AI

One of the standout additions is the voice chat mode for Meta AI, which is currently undergoing testing in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.18.18 for Android devices. This new feature enables users to interact with Meta AI using real-time voice commands, transforming how users engage with the platform.

The voice chat mode allows users to speak directly to Meta AI instead of typing messages. Users will have the option to choose from various voice options for Meta AI, personalizing their interaction experience. To activate this feature, users will need to enable it manually via a floating action button within the chat list. Once activated, Meta AI will continuously listen for commands, making it easier to interact hands-free—ideal for situations like driving or cooking.

For those concerned about privacy, WhatsApp has incorporated safeguards to ensure user control. Users can deactivate the voice chat mode at any time by leaving the chat or switching back to text mode. Additionally, a visual indicator in the status bar will show if Meta AI is actively listening, allowing users to manage their interactions with clarity.

Voice message transcription feature

In addition to the voice chat mode, WhatsApp is also preparing to roll out a voice message transcription feature for Android devices. This functionality, which was previously introduced for iOS users, is now making its way to Android.

How it works

The transcription feature will convert voice messages into text, making it easier to read and understand messages without having to listen to them. According to tipster AssembleDebug (via TheSpAndroid), users will need to download approximately 150MB of additional app data to activate this feature. Once enabled, users can read the text transcriptions of their voice messages before deciding to listen to them, enhancing convenience and accessibility.

Download the Update: Ensure you have the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, version 2.24.7.7.

Download additional data: Install a 150MB data update to enable the transcription feature.

Enable transcriptions: Follow the in-app instructions to activate voice message transcriptions.

Read before listening: Once enabled, you will be able to view text transcriptions of voice messages, allowing you to decide whether to listen to them.
