Mukesh Ambani has once again secured his spot as Asia’s richest man, but this time, it’s in a list that doesn’t include another familiar name—Gautam Adani. Bloomberg’s latest ranking of Asia’s 20 wealthiest families has the Ambani family at the top, while Adani is missing. The reason? This particular list focuses on business dynasties that have passed down wealth through generations, a criterion Adani doesn’t fit—at least, not yet.

Ambani, the chairman and CEO of Reliance Industries, took over the company in 2002 after the passing of his father, Dhirubhai Ambani. Over the years, he has expanded the business far beyond its original oil refining roots, moving into sectors like technology, retail, financial services, and green energy. With his children now actively managing different divisions, Reliance remains very much a family-run enterprise, making the Ambanis eligible for this ranking.

Others in the list

While the Ambanis took the top spot, they weren’t the only Indian family featured. The Mistry family, best known for their stake in Tata Sons and their Shapoorji Pallonji Group, ranked fourth with a total wealth of $37.5 billion. The Jindal family, owners of OP Jindal Group, followed at seventh place with USD 28.1 billion, while the Birla family, behind the Aditya Birla Group, secured ninth with $23 billion.

Beyond them, the Hinduja and Bajaj families also made it into the top 20. The Hinduja Group, founded in 1914, has interests spanning energy, automotive, finance, and healthcare, solidifying its place among Asia’s business dynasties.

Who’s second?

Right behind the Ambanis is the Chearavanont family from Thailand, with a net worth of $42.6 billion—less than half of what the Ambanis command. This family, now in its fourth generation, controls businesses across food, retail, and telecom sectors.
