A delegation from India is expected to travel to the United States soon for renewed trade negotiations, a government official told reporters, as both sides attempt to resolve lingering disputes over duties on auto components, steel, and agricultural products.

India remains one of the few countries still negotiating a trade agreement with Washington, even as President Donald Trump threatens to escalate tariff measures from August 1 as part of his broader trade war strategy.

No breakthrough yet

A recent visit by Indian officials to the US failed to yield a breakthrough, with both countries unable to bridge key differences. India has resisted demands to open its agriculture and dairy sectors, while seeking preferential tariff treatment for its exports to the US in comparison to competitors like Vietnam and China.

“The Indian team will visit the US soon for further talks,” said a trade ministry official who declined to be named.

Last week, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reaffirmed that New Delhi would pursue trade agreements only if they align with the country’s national interest.

India has also proposed retaliatory tariffs at the World Trade Organization, arguing that Washington’s 25 percent duty on automobiles and certain auto parts threatens around $2.89 billion worth of Indian exports.

“We are engaged with the US team through both virtual and in-person meetings,” the official said, adding that India remains hopeful of concluding the first phase of a deal by the autumn.
