The Sensex closed the day with a loss of 931 points, or 1.15 percent, at 80,220.72, while the Nifty 50 settled at 24,472.10, down 309 points or 1.25 percent.
The overall market capitalisation of firms listed on the BSE plunged to nearly ₹457.3 lakh crore from nearly ₹463.3 lakh crore in the previous session, making investors poorer by about ₹6 lakh crore in a day.
The rupee fell below 84 against the dollar for the first time; the Nifty dropped below 25,000 for the third straight day at 24,964.; the Sensex ended the day at 81,381.
Despite the formation of a black candle on the daily chart, the index managed to close just above the previous day’s level, suggesting a potential consolidation phase.
